Racing? Racing?
Well, I have been putting in some solid base since I got back on my bike after the broken pelvis. I was in South Florida last week visiting my parents and I managed to somehow ride 37 hours. I also put the chain on the big ring for the first time since December and things seem to be okay. I didn't go very hard, and never really had to, and I think that while I don't have any real speed or power at the moment, my fitness isn't all that bad. I'm starting the season from a decent place.
I have been riding without a power meter for a little while now and will probably be riding without power for a little while more. I start the race season in one week and I'll have to judge my fitness by the only unit of measure that really matters: results. Kind of cool, isn't it. I'll ease into the season with local racing and probably start going to the national and international events starting in May or so. Again, my season won't really get going until October and I'm planning on getting to all of the World Cups and hopefully the World Championships in early 2011, so it's going to be another long haul. Most of the racing I do for the next few months will be for fitness and not necessarily for any needed results.
One of the things that I decided is that I am going to race less this year. Just because there's a crit going on, it doesn't mean I need to do it. The stuff that makes me fast aren't 90 minute races. I would liked to get into more big road races this year. There are some races I have my eye on but I'll have to see what my fitness needs are at the time.
Above all, I'm going to keep my same attitude about racing that I've maintained since I returned to the sport: having fun. I can't wait. 2010 is going to be awesome.
